We’re On the Air: Loyalist radio student Emily Carter talks about life behind the microphone

Emily Carter is a second-year radio broadcasting student at Loyalist College. The broadcasting program prepares students to work behind the scenes and in front of a microphone.
Students work with all aspects of radio broadcasting including:

· Announcing
· Programming
· Copywriting
· Operating
· Sales and Promotions
· Regulations
· Production
· Music

Emily wasn’t always interested in radio. At one point, she actually wanted to be a meteorologist.

Radio first became an interest to her back in high school. She had joined the announcements club and eventually became president. Although skeptical at first, she ended up enjoying it so much she decided to pursue it further.

“I decided I should go into something that relates to that and I thought of radio,” she says. “It was a great decision.”

Now in her second year, she is enjoying the course more than ever.

“I’ve had the best time of my life, and met the most amazing people that I will ever meet,” states Emily.

Majoring in announcing, she gets 15 hours of air time a week every other week. When she’s not on air, she’s learning how to manage a radio station and listening to guest speakers. Getting to promote the station requires students to get outside the studio and take their work to other places.

“Last week a bunch of us went to the Mobile concert at Matt and Joes to promote our station,” notes Emily.

Being a student here has really had an impact on Emily.

“I’ve made such close friends and I know we will continue to be friends after we are done school,” she observes.

She finds that both the staff and students are “friendly and welcoming.” The teachers are always helpful and she can easily work with anyone. In fact, Emily has had such a great experience with her peers, she’s kept the same work group for every team assignment she’s worked on for over a year.

What she likes most about the course is getting to be with the people in her class because everyday she’s knows it’s going to be a good one. She also really enjoys getting to be on the air.

“It gives me a chance to show my personality,” she says.

Radio broadcasting isn’t for everyone. You need to be outgoing and have a serious interest in radio. For Emily, radio has had a very positive effect.

“It makes you more of a creative person, and it helps your personality shine,” she concludes.
